EC dismisses Parliament's dissolution, polling day, on social media

PUTRAJAYA - The Election Commission (EC) has rubbished a viral message which claims that Parliament will be dissolved on Jan 11 next year.

The message, which is widely circulating on social media, also alleges that nomination day will be March 11, while polling day will be March 25.

In a statement issued today, EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the message is ridiculous, because the gap between Parliament’s dissolution and the polling date stated is more than 60 days.

"According to Article 55 (4) of the Federal Constitution, a general election must be held within 60 days of the date of Parliament’s dissolution.

"Therefore, the public is advised not to believe the content of the message because Parliament would only be dissolved after receiving the consent of the Agong, on the advice of the Prime Minister," he added.
