Johor Sultan visits families of teens killed in horrific tragedy

JOHOR BARU - Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar visited the next of kin of the eight teenage cyclists who were killed after a car rammed into them.

He arrived at the mortuary of Hospital Sultan Aminah, where the victims' family members and relatives were waiting, at about 11.15am on Saturday.

Sultan Ibrahim, who was also in tears when speaking to the families, told them to monitor their children's whereabouts at all times and not to simply allow them to roam the streets, especially at night.

"Don't let it come to a situation where we cry for our children instead of the other way around.

"I myself have lost a son who will not return. I understand your feelings," he told the families before reciting a prayer.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Police Sulaiman Salleh said six of the victims died on the spot while two died on the way to the hospital.

Another eight teenagers were injured in the accident.

The incident took place at around 3.30am on Saturday along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam near the Mahmoodiah Muslim cemetery.

He said initial investigations showed that the driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman, was heading from Taman Pelangi to Jalan Skudai when the mishap happened.

ACP Sulaiman said that according to the driver, the teenagers were in the middle of the road, which was dark when the accident occurred. - the Star
