The suspects were armed with a firearm which is believed to be an air gun, and knives, city police ACP M Chandra said.
During the robbery which occurred at a premises that sells scrap metal the suspect with the firearm fired three shots and injured an employee there.
“The victim, a 41-year-old Indian national was shot in the right hand. He has undergone surgery and his condition is stable,” Chandra told a press conference at his office here yesterday.
Those wanted by police have been identified as Mohd Ruzleey Aliamat @ Ayie, AD Hasbullah Aminuddin @ Ter and Fairuz Sipin @ Apei. Both Mohd Ruzleey and AD Hasbullah are from Kampung Simpangan Tuaran while Fairuz is from Kampung Sungai Damit Tuaran.
Mohd Ruzleey is the main suspect of the robbery, Chandra said adding that while all three do not have any criminal record, they are known to be a group who are habitual drug users and involved in several housebreaking and car break-in cases.
“We have also arrested a 20-year-old local man who was the driver of the three suspects when they went to rob the premises. The man who is employed as an electrician was picked up from a house at Kampung Simpangan Tuaran at about 7pm last night,” Chandra disclosed.
Public information and witnesses statement led to the arrest of the man three hours after the robbery, Chandra said adding that the man’s urine test showed that he tested positive for drug use.
“We believe that the three suspects are still in the state and we are appealing to the public who know of the whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or the investigating officer of the case ASP Arif Abdul Razak at 012-2753860,” he added.
Chandra said the robbery occurred at about 3.15pm on Sunday at the premises which sells scrap metal. It is located along Jalan Tuaran in Menggatal.
Initial police investigations revealed that the 41-year-old Indian national and a local 21-year-old female clerk were in the office when a man armed with a black coloured gun walked in and grabbed an IPhone S5 there.
The man walked out of the room and shortly after, two shots were heard. The man then walked back into the office. By that time the female clerk had managed to escape and when the male victim tried to do the same, the suspect fired a shot which hit him on his right hand.
“The projectile used as ammunition went through the man’s palm,” Chandra said, adding that the robbery occurred during the heavy downpour on Sunday and this could have prevented the gunshots from being heard.
From witnesses’ accounts police found out that the four men had gone to the premises in a white MyVi with registration number SAA603X. Three men in face masks and caps had gone into the premises while another waited in the car.
One of them were armed with the firearm while the other two were armed with knives. Their intention was to rob the premises of the cash kept in a safe in the office, Chandra said.
“We believe that the initial two shots fired were to scare off the other employees while the third was to scare the male employee in the office. We also believe that the suspects panicked after seeing the man injured and fled without doing what they had initially set out to do,” he said.
“This case was solved about three hours after it happened with the arrest of the first suspect at about 7pm,” he said.
Chandra also said the MyVi used in the robbery was registered to a person whose last known address was Papar. The person had sold the car to the suspect’s family in 2010 but never had the ownership changed as the purchaser continued to pay the car loan.
“This is the risk of purchasing vehicles through the ‘sambung loan’ method. You never know what may happen to the vehicle and what it is being used for,” Chandra warned.
The case, he disclosed is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalty) Act 1971.
