Supermarket employees robbed RM500k by masked robbers

PENAMPANG -The Servay hypermarket in Penampang Baru, here, was robbed of RM500,000 cash while the money was in the process of being transported to the bank.

It was reliably learnt that at least two people who wore ski masks and long sleeve shirts had waited nearby for the staff to emerge with the cash before making their move.

A senior Servay staff and several workers were apparently on their way to the bank but decided to stop at the hypermarket headquarters located not far away at 3pm to collect three days' cash.

Their plan was to proceed to the bank to deposit all the money at one go.

One of the two men was then said to have approached the van that the staff were travelling in just as they were about to park.

The man suddenly opened the van door and threatened them with a weapon, hitting the senior staff in the head in the process, before fleeing with the cash.

It was understood that in their haste, scores of RM10 notes were blown by the wind along the road.

The other workers were shocked but unhurt.

It was also learnt that the weapon which was used to assault the senior staff broke into half.

Part of the weapon that was retrieved from the scene later had the words "BLA 809 Police" crudely written on it.

Investigations are under way.

According to a witness, the two suspects were seen sitting on a Water Department water mains for quite sometime and thought they were grasscutters since their bodies were covered and had ski masks.

It was also learnt that as the witness passed by the suspects, one of them took off his sunglass temporarily to wipe sweat from his brow and noticed he had Chinese features.
