Spratly Islands long part of Filipino-Muslim's ancestral domain

Spratly Islands long part of Filipino-Muslim’s ancestral domain, prior to arrival of Spanish colonials in 1521, Sultan of Sulu says

Manila: The Sultan of Sulu in the southern Philippines has claimed that the contested Spratly Island in the South China Sea was part of the ancestral domain of Filipino-Muslims prior to the arrival of the Spanish colonials in the 16th century, a local paper said.

“China has no right over the Spratly Islands in what it calls the South China Sea because that is part of our ancestral domain,” Majaraj Julmuner Jannaral, Sultanate information officer, told the Philippine Star.

The Sultanate of Sulu has had proprietary rights over the Spratlys because Sabah (now part of Malaysia), the Sulu archipelago in the southern Philippines, and Palawan in southwestern Philippines belonged to the Sultanate of Sulu even before the Spaniards colonized the Philippines in 1521, explained Jannaral, a representative of Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I, the reigning Sultan of Sulu and Sabah (Malaysia’s North Borneo).

In 1658, the Sultan of Brunei gave Sabah, Borneo’s eastern and northern part of Borneo to the Sultan of Sulu who helped the former win a civil war. Sabah was recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu’s sovereignty (in the Philippines).

On June 22, 1878 (during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines, Baron Von Overbeck, an Austrian, and Alfred Dent, a Briton, who represented the British East India Co (which became North Borneo Co), forged a lease agreement with Sri Paduka Maulana Al Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alan (representative of Sulu’s Sultanate), to lease Sabah for 5,000 Malaysian ringgits annually.

The company provided arms to the Sultan of Brunei to resist the Spanish colonials in the Philippines.

“Without the Sultan’s consent, the Spaniards (at the end of their colonial rule) illegally transferred the Philippines, including the Sulu archipelago, Sabah, and Guam to the US when Spain and the US signed the Treaty of Paris in 1898,” said Jannaral. It paved the way for the US colonial era in the Philippines.

When the United Kingdom granted independence to Malaysia in 1963, the Federation of Malaysia was formed. The British North Borneo Co turned over Sabah to the Federation which also included Singapore and Sarawak.

Before this, in 1962, the British colonials initiated a referendum among residents in Sabah who were asked if they wanted to be part of the Malaysian Federation.

The Malaysian government has continued paying the heirs of the Sultan of Sulu the amount that the British North Borneo Co used to pay in the 18th century.

In 1939, Chief Justice Makaskie of the High Court of North Borneo upheld the claims of the heirs of the Sultan of Sulu, in response to a case filed by the Sultan’s eight heirs.

In 1962, former President Diosdado Macapagal formally claimed Sabah, after Sultan Muhammad Esmail Kiram gave sovereign political right to the Philippine government to pursue the claim.

The same right was extended to ex-dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1969, Jannaral said. In 1972, Marcos trained several Filipino-Muslims in Corregidor Island, off Manila. His plan was to launch an armed secession in Sabah.

At the time, Malaysian authorities were also helping leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which waged armed struggle for the secession of Mindanao from the central and northern part of the Philippines. MNLF also wanted to establish an independent Islamic state in Mindanao.

When the trainees learned about Marcos’ plan, they waged a mutiny and were killed. One survived, swam towards Manila, and told authorities what happened to his companions.

The so-called “Jabidah Massacre,” was revealed by former Senator Benigno Aquino in the Senate in the 70s. The incident fired a strong anti-Marcos sentiment, which prompted the president to establish a Martial law rule in 1972.

Since then, the country’s claim over Sabah was never revived. But thousands of Filipino-Muslims have gone to Sabah to work, many of whom have been deported for lack of documents.

“The Spratly Archipelago is part of the Sulu Sea (the inner area around the islands in the southern Philippines, which is part of the West Philippine Sea (the new name of the South China Sea),” Jannaral concluded.

Exploration of the marine territory and the waters around the Spratly Archipelago, Palawan in southwestern Philippines and the southern Philippines, belong to the residents in those areas, he added.

These are hints that the Philippines’ claim in the Spratly Archipelago could be strengthened if the government revives its Sabah claim, political analysts said.

China, Taiwan, and Vietnam claim the whole of the South China Sea.The Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei claim some parts of the Spratly Archipelago.

  9. sabah really belongs to the Philippines..only Malaysians grabbed it and hiding behind its british protector who illegally colonized it and gave it away to Malaysia ....Now Malaysia is enjoying Philippine State of Sabah of its rich natural resources while its sabanians and Filipino muslims who owns the land suffer....You malaysians get out of Sabah...enough of this illegal occupation...you have profited too much from the Filipino muslim land, and you are just paying youre rent of Sabah State for 5,000.00 ringgit to the surviving sultanate of Sulo which is just equivalent to 70,000.00 Philippine peso and never incresed despite of the enormost revenue income you are deriving from its resouces until now..the lease of the land from the sultanate of Sulo has been long expired and you continue occupying that Sabah land of the Philippine sabanian and muslim Filipino People since you occupied that Philippine territory..thats another mistake you are making ...you make the Filipinos/Sabanian very angry...youre really a bussinessman and a cheater, you have contributed nothing for the good/welfare of the Sabanians and muslim Filipino brothers who owns the land... You dont own Sabah ..hence stop occupying it and return it to its rightful owner...the Philippines at once. stop these injustices you are practicing....stop pretending to be friendly with Philippines by brokering to any Philippine internal affairs concerning our muslim brother but secretly (yet not a secret anymore)whom you are just using to serve as proxy for your own war just to maintain your position occupying into Sabah illegally, you did nothing but just to initiate the Philippine muslim people to fight each other and make Philippine official busy fighting these rebels going against philippine government to divert its attention and buy time to delay and forget its claim of returning Sabah to the Philippines...you are wise when it comes to landgrabbing and take over other nations own land sovereignty, youre a traitor , thats unfair and crazy, you believe in Allah maybe?...but i dont see you are doing the good teachings of Allah, you are very sneaky and tricky partner for the Philippines, you wont surrender it until you get exhausted of your remaining resources and effort to maintain your Sabah position, but i look forward for your fall in this case..!!!, The international community probably accept your position over Sabah because they dont know the real story behind all these Sabah claim of the Philippines

    5. Where in the Qu'ran does it teach Muslims to bow to disbelievers and unbelievers? Don't use religion if Sulu really wants Sabah it should exit Philippines and join their brothers in Malaysia.
In 1877 the Sultan of brunei ceded Sabah to the British and that included the whole of Sabah which means he regarded it as his territory not SUlu who claim Brunei gave it to them since this is obviously false therefore Sulu has no claim on Sabah since they fail to show actual ownership of Sabah. Raiding and killing people is not actual rule
In 1878 Kiram ceded Sabah until the end of time a few moths later he capitulated to the Spanish who in 1885 in the Madrid protocols surrendered any claim to Sabah on behalf of Sulu.
In 1903 Sulu sultan ceded a further few islands and confirmed that the 1878 treaty was a cession therefore using actual facts and not falsehoods Sabah is where it should be and not as part of a tin pot republic who can't even develop Mindanao which is a resource rich territory.
Sulu was illegally seized by Philippines through American treachery yet you think somehow the people of Sabah decision to help form Malaysia was "illegal" free Sulu then talk otherwise be quiet.

  34. Salam, saya bukan orang Sabah, bukan orang Filipina, saya orang Pulau Pinang.

  35. SHOULD NOT THE SABAH PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN SAY?

Instead of becoming a political football, the Sabah people should vote in a referendum to solve the issue of independence or whether to continue as part of Malaysin or join the Philippines?

My guess is that the Sabahans will vote for independence free from any foreign interference!

BTW if the Philippines want to go to war with Malaya about Sabah they are very welcome. Maybe it should win its own local wars first?

Just leave Sabah alone and enjoy being independent is the best solution!

Or Sabah could unite with Sarawak to form North Kalimantan- an idea discussed 50 years ago. This is more "natural" than become parts of other countries who have territorial ambitions.

SABAHANS VOTE FOR FREEDOM & INDEPENDENCE!

  36. WHO OWNS SABAH?

"In 1658, the Sultan of Brunei gave Sabah, Borneo’s eastern and northern part of Borneo to the Sultan of Sulu who helped the former win a civil war. Sabah was recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu’s sovereignty (in the Philippines)"

The Brunei Sultanate also gave away Sarawak in 1841 to the Brookes.

The Philippines' claim is based on a 1658 event.

BY 1658 the Philippines was conquered and ruled by Spain. The Spanish created the "Philippines" from a bunch of sultanates and islands.

But Spain did not occupy and rule Sabah- so it was excluded as part of the Philippines for 500 years. Nor did the Sulu Sultanate exert any real influence on the Sabah territory since the Sulu Sultanate came under the Spanish rule. It effectively never left the hands of Brunei.

By the 19th Century Sabah was lost to the British when Sabah became privatised by the North Borneo Company which in turn became a British protectorate and then colony over a period of 100 years.

Neither the Spanish not US colonialists ever appear to claim Sabah when they ruled the Philippines. So does the Philippines have any claim at all now?

An example may help to clarify. The Dutch East Asia empire included part of West Timur but not East Timur. Indonesia today is really what was the Dutch empire. The Indonesia invaded and occupied East Timor in 1975. It had no political, historical or cultural or any claim on East Timor since it was a Portuguese colony till 1975.

East Timorese to their eternal credit and pride fought and won independence from not just Portugal but the new colonial master Indonesia...The whole world applauded.

Brunei should be able to claim back Sabah and Sarawak if the Philippines has a claim on Sabah at all!

Sure, we got problems buts more of Internal matters. Sulu sultanate is illegitimate losers relegated to the sidelines of history and serve them right for slave riding the Borneo and their reign of terror in the 17th-19th centuries. Brunei is a loser too for relying too much on British for preserving its monarchy.

  37. WHO OWNS SABAH?
    (part2)

"In 1658, the Sultan of Brunei gave Sabah, Borneo’s eastern and northern part of Borneo to the Sultan of Sulu who helped the former win a civil war. Sabah was recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu’s sovereignty (in the Philippines)"

In the 1960s an attempt was made by the independence movement in British Borneo/ Kalimantan to correct this historical "error" of judgement with the proposal to form North Kalimantan comprising Brunei Sabah & Sarawak.

    See this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Borneo_Federation

This is the most sensible idea from the geographical, history and cultural point of view. All 3 colonies at the time had similar backgrounds. They are not physically part of Malaya or Philippines but Borneo/Kalimantan.

The British were bent on imposing their "Malaysia Plan" to secure their interests in Borneo. To do this they sponsored Malaya to take over the Borneo colonies or re-colonized them as the Borneo/North Kalimantan opposition asserted. They totally ignored the North Kalimantan Federation proposal.

This precipitated Brunei uprising in December 1962 of the Tentara Nasional Kalimantan Utara (TNKU) led by the Brunei People's Party (BPP). This was also related to the BPP having earlier won 99% of the electable seats in the Brunei legislature under the British but the British prevented them from taking power.

    http://www.ovguide.com/brunei-people%27s-party-9202a8c04000641f8000000000c72ec6#

The TNKU plan was to liberate all the British Borneo colonies and form North Kalimantan.

However, it did not succeed as the British counter-attacked with overwhelming force and suppressed the rebels. This led to the development of the guerrilla war for independence under the Sarawak Communist Organization which lasted till 1990.The SCO later became the Communist Party of North Kalimantan which as its names suggested also supported the formation of North Kalimantan with the BPP

Thus on 16 September 1963 just a short 8 months from the Uprising the British hastily transferred Sabah and Sarawak into Malaya colonial rule under the newly created "Malaysia". That's how Sabah and Sarawak lost their right to real independence.

The anger of the cheated people in Sabah and Sarawak has been simmering for 48 years. In the last few years this more or less came to a head in Sabah with the movement to question the meaning of being part of Malaysia and to demand Kuala Lumper's compliance with the 20 points Agreement in Sabah and Malaysia Agreement in tandem with a demand for autonomy.

Many people in Sabah and Sarawak still mistakenly believe that have independence in Malaysia when in reality they were forcibly re-colonized by UMNO Malaya.

The recent history of the former British Borneo colonies has therefore been one where neighbouring countries attempt to deny the local people of their right to decide for themselves on the question of real independence.

May be it is time again for the people here to exercise that right and settle the issue once and for all.

Hold a general referendum in Brunei Sabah and Sarawak on whether:

    1. Brunei and the 2 Malayan colonies should unite as independence North Kalimantan.
    2. Sabah and Sarawak have their own national independence.
    3. Whether Sabahans wish to remain in "Malaysia" or become part of the Philippines.

One would anticipate the vote would definitely be for independence if not for an independent North Kalimantan.

Of course such a referendum must be held fairly without interference from anyone and only after the issues have been thoroughly debated by the local people.

In the final analyis, the inalienable right of the Sabah people to determine their destiny must be respected and not for any foreign countries to interfere.

  39. IS IT HISTORY OR A LIE? - THE TRUTH IS EVEN STRANGER....

This question provoked my curiosity and I found this very interesting information BY GOOGLING and went to Wikipedia on a street in Brunei named after a Chinese locally called Jalan Ong Sum Ping.

Now you must be really someone special especially if you are "Chinese" in Brunei.

There is a long write up in wikipedia- again unusual by for those who don't know our history of Brunei Sabah and Sarawak (all links as siblings of Bore
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huang_Senping.

The first writer was correct except that the name is not that accurate?

It is not legend by fakto sila! What is disouted is whether Ong became a Sultan of Brunei and if so all the royal family may have Chinese blood. Great story! Also the Chinese had settlements in Sabah since before or around Ming times....

Reproduced below is just an excerpt

    "Huang Senping
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Huang Senping (Chinese: 黃森屏), Pengiran Maharaja Lela of Brunei. He is better known by his Hokkien name Ong Sum Ping to Bruneians. The Hokkien name implies that Huang Senping was a native of Fujian, China. This also finds support in the account of Brunei in Chapter 211 of the official History of Ming.[1]

According to Wen Xiongfei 温雄飞 in the 《南洋华侨史》, Huang Senping came to Brunei in 1375 during the early years of China's Ming Dynasty.[2]

Huang Senping later married Princess Ratna Dewi, the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Shah of Brunei, and was conferred the nobility title of Pengiran Maharaja Lela and elected Chief of Kinabatangan.[3][4]

Oral traditions indicated that there was a Chinese settlement in present-day Kinabatangan, Sabah. "Kinabatangan" could mean "Chinese river". "Kina" (kee-na) is used by Kadazan Dusun which similar to "Cina" (chee-na) used by Malay which refer the Chinese. According to early account such as Salasilah Raja-Raja Brunei (Genealogy of the Brunei Kings) which was first written from oral traditions during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Hassan (1582–1598) and subsequently copied and updated from time to time and also the Sejarah Melayu (written by Tun Seri Lanang in 1612), Huang Senping "succeeded his father-in-law.

He was known as Sultan Ahmad and ruled Brunei". This version, however, contradicts later account engraved on the Batu Tarsilah

(Genealogical Tablet of the Sultans of Brunei) written in 1807 that Sultan Ahmad was a brother of Sultan Muhammad Shah and he was not Huang Senping.

The latter version is the accepted official history of Brunei.[5] Chapter 211 of the official History of Ming[1] recorded the following: "万历时,为王者闽人也。或言郑和使婆罗,有闽人从之,因留居其地,其后人竟据其国而王之。" (During the reign of Ming emperor Wanli 1573–1620, the King of Brunei was a Hokkien. Some said a Hokkien followed Admiral Zheng He to Brunei and stayed behind. His descendants later became the rulers of the country). This passage is an apparent reference to Huang Senping, the only Chinese in the Bruneian royal genealogy (although his arrival in Brunei predated Admiral Zheng He's first voyage by 30 years), and suggested that his descendants continued to rule the fiefdom of Kinabatangan up until the reign of Ming emperor Wanli 1573–1620.

During the Brunei Civil War (1661-1673), Sultan Muhyiddin of Brunei called for the assistance of Sultan of Sulu to help defeat Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin promising them independence as well as the territory of present-day (north-eastern) Sabah to be given to the Sultan of Sulu.[6]. The promised territory was or included Kinabatangan."

  42. In the final analyis, the inalienable right of the Sabah people to determine their destiny must be respected and not for any foreign countries to interfere.

    end of all comments-

So, to all Flilipinos, Indons and other worthless "pro-independence" fakes, Muslim or non-Muslim, the decision if FINAL:

Sabah IS AN INDEPENDENT AND SOVEREIGN STATE within the FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA! Even if it secceded, it is still independent and sovereign, free of foreign powers.

You foreigners are counting your days to be kicked out of this country!

  44. Sabah should stand on its own. To join the Philippines republic is surely a stupid idea. Look at Philippines, the economies were left behind compare to Malaysia. But Sabah alone is more better compare to Philippines. As for Malaysia within, the peninsular should NOT treat Sabahan & Sarawak as a depository. The 20 points Agreement is not being truly adhere by the peninsular. Eversince I went to school since 1977, the word goes around proclaiming that Sabah & Sarawak has not enough teacher so they bring in peninsular teacher here. But now I'm 43 year old and yet the same issues goes around. I don't think there is no qualified candiddates from Swk & Sabah to be train as teacher. Sabah & Swk already had its own universities private or public and yet this ex grad were not absorb as trained teacher?

Head of department in Sabah & Swk are mostly headed by staf from peninsular but is there any dept in peninsular solely headed by Sarawakian or Sabahan? Which state if there is? I remember at one time a few years ago, a Sarawakian head as Director General of Education but it won't last long just because it is protest by UMNO from Johor. And yet we were being shower with 1Malaysia. Malaysia would'nt exist if not the combination from Sabah, Swk & Singapore. We should be on par with the peninsular. But nowadays, it seem that the peninsular try to cover up the 20 point agreement slowly. Look at our History education, it is to be the least the history of sabah & Swk being taught in school. What more to say about those 20 points agreement. A lot more happens nowadays. In 1990, I try to apply as an army officer (lieutenant )when it open its recruitment and I went to an army camp in Kuching, the officer I met was from peninsular, he told me the application form already finish. But the advertisement just open the day before, i met my uncle to inform this matter and relate it to his officer and this captain ask the officer again about the application form. They show a bundle of new application form. This is truly discrimination toward sarawakian.
